The project Tolerance Institute started in 2003 at the Library for Foreign Literature. By 2005 it has become the independent entity. The Institute mainly focuses on the development of democratic bases for a pluralistic society, on the introduction of and the acceptance by society of practices based on respect for tolerance and for the rights of the individual. It will also work on the development of partnership between the public, businesses, the mass media and the governmental authorities at all levels. The Institute operates in partnership with other Russian and international charitable organisations, with NGOs, with federal and regional governmental bodies, and with public and state organisations. The activity of the Institute is directed towards the following themes:
School children, students and young professionals are targeted in particular, because the future of international relations will be in their hands. They share a common experience in different languages through which they are able to share thoughts and feelings, to transmit information, to explain, discuss, argue and persuade. The young people who take part in our programmes emerge better equipped to contribute to their society and with a better understanding of the world they live in Within the framework of each of its programmes the Institute conducts discussions, conferences, seminars and exhibitions on the question of tolerance in contemporary Russia. One of the priorities will be the publication, for both children and adults, of materials covering various aspects of tolerance. The Institute compiles information on Russian and foreign state and public organisations, on potential professional contacts, innovative projects and methods, and on the latest research in the field of tolerance both in Russia and abroad. We believe that the Institute for Tolerance might be considered an analytical, consulting and resource centre for Russian organisations, and a serious partner for international communities. The linchpin of this activity is the Library for Foreign Literature, which not only manages programmes, but also provides advice and support for Tolerance Institute network programmes. It also is responsible for the international growth of Tolerance Institute. Thousands of Russian people and all over the world are able to share their ideas and culture through the Tolerance Institute network and regard Library for Foreign Literature as its base. |
